MIES-UB Research Building
BARCELONA (Spain)
The MIES building project, winner of the public competition promoted by the University of Barcelona (UB), is dedicated to research in health sciences.
The main design strategy is to make the most efficient use of the available floor area by optimising the functional layout. To achieve this, we defined a basic laboratory module, establishing the minimum distance between structural columns. This module always incorporates an external façade and an internal façade facing the corridor, where building services are concentrated, minimising disruption to activity in the event of future layout changes. The repetition of this module ensures flexibility and allows for multiple interior configurations, enabling the building to adapt to evolving needs over time.
Beyond functionality and flexibility, the project places special emphasis on interaction between users, incorporating spaces that encourage meeting and exchange, both indoors and outdoors, taking advantage of Barcelona’s climate.
Overall, the project proposes a flexible, sustainable and efficient facility, capable of responding to the demands of a highly technical programme while meeting user needs, both now and in the future.
