Ernest Lluch Hospital New Vallès Occidental Hospital
Cerdanyola del Vallès, Barcelona (Spain)
The project for Ernest Lluch Hospital, New Vallès Occidental Hospital, develops the winning proposal of the competition for the new regional hospital serving Cerdanyola del Vallès, Ripollet, Montcada i Reixac, and Barberà del Vallès. The complex embraces the responsibility of publicly representing a strategic location, where the Vallès gateway, major communication hubs, and environmental initiatives linked to landscape restoration converge.
The building is organized on a large plinth that supports the inpatient wards in an “L” shape, oriented towards sunlight and views of the Collserola mountain range. It acts as a link between the landscape and the urban fabric. On the eastern side, the planned Can Massot Park will extend, providing access to the hospital through an atrium on the north façade. Natural light is a central element of the project.
Designed with human-centered criteria, the hospital focuses on people’s well-being. The orientation of the inpatient units ensures that the rooms receive sunlight for most of the day. Public outpatient consultation areas are also oriented to the south, while several transversal courtyards allow light to reach even the underground spaces.
The design dissolves the boundaries between interior and exterior through transitional spaces and a large green area that enhances the conditions of a complex site. With 206 beds and specialized units, Ernest Lluch Hospital provides healthcare coverage to several municipalities on the outskirts of Barcelona, consolidating itself as a regional healthcare facility.
This proposal remained at the preliminary design stage and was never built.
